List of Terminologies

Note: This glossary consists of only an introductory account of Islamic terms. For proper and complete understanding, please consult any Sunnī scholar.

  • ‘Arafaĥ (عَرَفَہ): 9th day of Żul-Hijjaĥ (last Islamic month)
  • ‘Iṭr (عِطۡر): Perfume (lawful)
  • Du’ā (دُعا): Supplication
  • Farḍ (فَرۡض): It is an obligation without performing which one cannot be freed from duty and if some act is Farḍ in worship, the worship will not be accomplished without performing that act. Not performing a Farḍ deliberately is a grave sin.
  • Ghusl (غُسۡل): Ritual bath
  • Ḥāji (حاجِی): One who has performed Ḥajj
  • Ḥalāl (حَلال): Lawful (in Sharī’aĥ)
  • Ḥarām (حَرَام): It is opposite of Farḍ; committing it deliberately even once is a grave sin.
  • Ḥujjāj (حُجَّاج): Plural of Ḥāji, i.e. pilgrims of Hajj
  • Imām (اِمَام): A Muslim who leads others in congregational Ṣalāĥ
  • ‘Imāmaĥ (عِمَامَہ): Turban
  • Īṣāl-e-Šawāb (اِیۡـصَـالِ ثَــوَاب): The act of donating the reward of good deeds to others.
  • Jabal (جَبَل): Mountain
  • Jannaĥ (جَنَّت): Paradise
  • Kaffāraĥ (کَفَّارَہ): Expiation
  • Kanz-ul-Imān (کَنزُالاِیمان): Name of the Urdu translation of the Holy Qurān by Imām of Aĥl-us-Sunnaĥ, Al-Ḥaj, Al-Ḥāfiẓ, Al-Qārī Imām Aḥmad Razā Khan عَـلَيْهِ رَحْمَةُ الـرَّحْمٰنْ.
  • Kawšar (کَوۡثَر): The fountain of Paradise
  • Kufr (کُفۡر): Disbelief
  • Maḥram (مَحۡرَم): One with whom marriage is Ḥarām forever
  • Makrūĥ (مَکۡرُوہ): Disliked
  • Makrūĥ Taḥrīmī (مَکۡرُوہ تَحۡرِیۡمِی): It is in comparison with Wājib; if it occurs in worship, the worship gets defective and the committer of Makrūĥ Taḥrīmī is considered a sinner. Although its gravity is lesser than that of Ḥarām, committing it a few times is a grave sin.
  • Makrūĥ Tanzīĥī (مَکۡرُوہ تَنۡزِیۡہِی): It is in comparison with Sunan-e-Ghaīr Muakkadaĥ. It is an act which Sharī’aĥ dislikes to be committed, although there is no punishment for the one who commits it.
  • Miḥrāb (مِحۡرَاب): The part of a Masjid where the Imām stands in congregational Ṣalāĥ
  • Mimber (مِنۢبَر): Pulpit
  • Miskīn (مِسۡکِیۡن): A Miskīn is the one who does not possess anything and he has to beg others for food or clothes for covering the body. Begging is Ḥalāl (allowed) for him.
  • Miswāk (مِسۡوَاک): A twig of specific trees for brushing the teeth.
  • Mu’allim (مُعَلِّم): Guide
  • Muftī (مُفْتِی): An authorized scholar who is expert in Islamic jurisprudence to answer religious queries
  • Muḥaddiš (مُحَدِّث): One who is proficient in Ḥadīš
  • Muḥrim (مُحۡرِم): One in the state of Iḥrām
  • Mustaḥab (مُسۡتَحَب): An act which Sharī’aĥ likes to be performed but its abandonment is not disliked.
  • Na’at (نَــعۡـت): Poetic eulogy in praise of the Prophet of mankind, the peace of our heart and mind,the most generous and kind
